RE-IMAGINING CO-LIVING HOUSING IN BROOKLYN, NY
Spaces of live-work have largely been flattened by market-driven compartmentalizing typologies. Residential architecture characterized by uniform steel and glass rooms dominates the cityscape, boxing in our lives and encouraging isolation of the individual from the social. Attempts of co-living are developed only in the name of speculative housing markets, continuing to distance our cities from any meaningful form of collectivity.

PartStudio is a design collective project that produced Part Architecture Models to develop a series of Architectural Parts that will facilitate a live-work collective for artists in Brooklyn, NY.
01 | VESTIGIAL STAIRWELL
Open stairwells typically utilized unlit stairways, which ran through the center of the building. Hallways connected the stairwell to apartments. The units had a high depth to width ratio.

Architectural interventions of the 20th century ascribed with social and environmental qualities have gradually faded into misuse with the introduction of modern technologies, becoming ‘vestigial’ with a minimum function. Where vestigial organs are parts of the body that once had a function but are now more-or-less useless, vestigial architecture parts were once integral in orchestrating environmental conditions, subsiding with the introduction of modern systems into misused.
